I am very lucky to be married to a Yorkshireman who bravely ventured down south to Crawley, and together we have our son who, in his own words, is “epic”! We’re happiest outdoors – at the beach, on our bikes, or more recently under canvas, as we’ve embraced the joys of camping – allowing us to make even more memories together.
Our rescue Beagle ensures we’re out for plenty of walks, though his stubborn streak means he tests my patience just as much as he tops up my step count. These moments of joy and connection remind me every day how precious life is — and why it matters so much to make the most of it.
As a mum to a 7-year-old whirlwind, multitasking is second nature, and as part of our school community, I helped to set up a PTFA – and am proud to be Chairperson of such a great group of volunteers. My career has been in the charity sector for over 20 years, raising vital funds for causes that make a real difference to people’s lives. I was privileged to spend over a decade at a leading end of life charity where it was a real honour to hear the powerful stories of recipients and supporters who trusted me with their experiences.
For many years, I was also a Samaritan listening volunteer. Those conversations were often humbling and always reminded me how important it is to be heard, especially during life’s most difficult moments.
These days, I’m a firm believer in saying yes to new experiences. I’ve planted ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, stood on The Mall with my family at the Platinum Jubilee, the Queen’s funeral, and King Charles III’s coronation – soaking up the history I’ve always loved.
And if you are wondering about the purple… Before my third birthday, I insisted everything had to be purple – cake, presents, balloons – and my Dad even dyed his moustache to match. My Mum thought it was just a phase, but 40+ years later, purple is still my happy colour. It makes me smile, “Purple Kate” is my BSL name, it’s even the wrapper of my favourite chocolate bar – it is just a part of me 💜
